The current Common Agricultural Policy sets the legislative framework for the period 2014 - 2020. It is built on two pillars: direct payments and rural development. Both pillars contain measures that can contribute to encourage bioenergy development.

The role of biomass

The agricultural sector is an important provider of biomass as a source of energy. Indeed, the agricultural biomass resource can be used to produce heat, electricity and biofuels. The agricultural sector also has a role to play to develop renewable energy consumption, including bioenergy.

Our position

The ongoing Common Agricultural Policy is an important and interesting tool to allow farmers and forest owners to invest in and develop biomass production for energy purposes. Several measures are possible according to EU law. However, the final decision belongs to Member States / Regional authorities on whether these measures are possible to implement at national or regional level.
